Birds of india: Anastomus oscitans

Anastomus oscitans, or commonly called Asian Openbill Stork is found in Karnataka, India.

They are recognized by a distinctive gap between the upper and lower mandible. Chicks are born without this gap but it is thought that this gap could be an adaptation that would help them handling their favorite prey: snails.

These photos were taken in Ranganthittu Bird Sanctuary during nesting season.
